Gibb’s Farm was a German coffee plantation during the German colonial era. The Germans cultivated the plantation until the end of the 1930s and called it Nova Franconia.

A man named James Gibb arrived on the farm after the war in 1946. He rebuilt the farm together with his wife Margaret and his three children. Tanzania achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. About 10 years later the country transformed to socialism and all farmers were expropriated. About the same time first visitors reached the Ngorongoro Crater. There were no lodges and guesthouses available at that time. The first visitors came and asked for food or if they may set up their tent in the garden. This marked the birth of the first lodge here in Northern Tanzania. The first small accommodations were built. A company offering safaris joined and the lodge grew slowly over the years.

The husband of Margaret developed Alzheimer’s disease and became a nursing case in 2004. She sold the lodge to an American family which still is the owner today. The old buildings were demolished in 2006 and rebuilt from scratch during the following years. Since then the lodge keeps on developing.

• 32 - 0 days, no show, and early departure: 100 %
